IC卡是一种内藏大规模集成电路的塑料卡片，其大小和原来的磁卡电话的磁卡大小相同。它是将具有储存、加密和数据处理能力的微处理及大容量存储器的集成 电路芯片嵌入到一块信用卡同样大小的不易折叠的塑料基片上。能像一台计算机 一样相对独立地进行信息处理和信息交换的一种卡片现代信息负载工具。
IC卡分三种类型：
存储卡或记忆卡(memory card)、带有CPV的智能卡(smart card)、带有显示器及键盘CPV的超级智能卡。
优点是存储量大、安全保密性强、携带方便。
